Workforce professionalisation and remembering Jeff Lee

Shared by Goodman Sibeko - 21 March 2025
Prevention dominos

This week, we say goodbye(le lien est externe) to our dear friend and mentor, Jeff Lee, the founding Executive Director of ISSUP. Jeff was a steadfast advocate for the professionalization of prevention(le lien est externe), insisting that those working in this field should be appropriately specialized. He often reminded us that while generalists and treatment specialists are well-meaning and deeply embedded within their communities, they are not always best placed to develop and implement evidence-based prevention systems. Jeff emphasized that prevention must be treated as a distinct science—one that is grounded in rigorous research...

Background
Child poverty is linked to poorer physical and mental health, negative educational outcomes, and long-term social and psychological issues, all of which increase service demand and costs. Traditionally, prevention and early intervention efforts have focused on improving inter-parental relationships, parenting skills, or child development (e.g., early childhood education, family therapy, youth mentoring). These programs often target low-income families but rarely address poverty directly. While such interventions have shown some success, their effects are typically small, short-term...

Background

Drug use trends among youth change rapidly, making it difficult for experts to respond quickly. Delays in addressing these issues can lead to preventable health problems and deaths. The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the need for better strategies to respond quickly and fairly using existing treatments and prevention efforts. Evidence-based interventions (EBIs), like the Michigan Model for Health™ (MMH), are already effective in tackling emerging drug problems. However, we need to improve how these strategies are implemented to better respond to new drug trends. This research aims...

INTRODUCTION: Longitudinal prevention research in adolescents often involves sensitive data collection, necessitating anonymity. Self-Generated Identification Codes (SGICs) have emerged as a tool for linking anonymous data while preserving privacy, but their effectiveness, especially in large-scale studies, remains under-explored. This study aimed to assess the feasibility of using SGICs for linking anonymous longitudinal data in a school-based substance use prevention study.

METHODS: We utilised a three-armed randomised control trial design, utilising data from the Czech Unplugged Study. The...

As part of our ongoing efforts to achieve significant drug demand reduction in Liberia, we are implementing evidence-based prevention intervention programs. Journal of Studies on Alcohol and Drugs

Previous studies have shown that when students perceive their parents set strict limits on underage drinking, they tend to consume less alcohol. However, the best ways to communicate these limits effectively remain unclear. To explore this, a recent study examined the potential impact of hypothetical text messages focused on drinking limits on students' estimated alcohol consumption.

The study involved 253 undergraduate students who participated in an online survey. They were asked to imagine a scenario where they planned to attend a night event that involved drinking. Each participant was...
