WHO Statement: Tobacco Use and COVID-19

Tobacco smoking is a known risk factor for many respiratory difficulties. A review of studies by public health experts convened by WHO on 29 April 2020 found that smokers are more likely to develop severe disease with COVID-19, compared to non-smokers.

Following the review, the WHO has released a statement that explains the elevated risk.

The article outlines potential smoking reduction and cessasion intervention programmes.

Protecting youth from industry manipulation and preventing them from tobacco and nicotine use

Breast cancer. Smoking tobacco increases the risk of breast cancer in women who started before they got pregnant for the first time (Gaudet, 2013).

 

Lung cancer. Smoking tobacco is a significant risk factor for developing lung cancer. The risk increases with daily use, cumulative doses, the number of years of consumption and onset at an early age (Caicojya, 2003).

The coronavirus pandemic has presented a new challenge for public health services around the world.

Although scientists are working tirelessly to comprehend more about the virus, there are still many unanswered questions.

In a recent interview, Dr. Nora Volkow, who heads the National Institute on Drug Abuse, describes factors that may increase the risk of coronavirus causing greater harm to the infected individual.
