Call for Review: School-Based Substance Use Prevention Standards

We’re excited to share that the School-Based Substance Use Prevention, Education, and Intervention: A Multi-Tiered and Developmental Approach for Kindergarten to Grade 12 Schools (PRV STD-16:2025), is now open for public review in both English and French.

This landmark standard, developed through a partnership between Wellstream, the Canadian Centre on Substance Use and Addiction, and the Canadian Association of School System Administrators, under CSA Group management, represents months of collaborative work with youth, educators, health professionals and researchers from across Canada. It will provide research-based guidance to help K-12 schools develop comprehensive, compassionate responses to student substance use through prevention, education and intervention strategies.

We invite you and others on your team to review the draft standard and share your feedback. Your expertise and perspectives are essential to ensuring this standard meets the diverse needs of school communities across Canada.

How to Participate

  • Access the draft standard
  • Review by December 6, 2025
  • Submit comments directly through the review platform

All feedback received during this review period will be carefully considered and examined by our Executive Working Group and Committee of Subject Matter Experts as we finalize the standard for release in early 2026.

Please share this opportunity with your colleagues and networks who work in education, youth health, substance use prevention or related fields. Broad input will strengthen this important resource for schools across Canada.

If you have questions about the review process, please contact Brian Beckett of the CSA Group at brian [dot] beckett [at] csagroup [dot] org (brian[dot]beckett[at]csagroup[dot]org).
