Purpose of Review

Alcohol and cannabis are the most commonly used substances during adolescence and are typically initiated during this sensitive neurodevelopmental period.

The aim of this review is to provide an overview of the most recent literature focused on understanding how these substances affect the developing brain.

Findings

The effects of alcohol use include:

  • widespread decreases in gray matter volume and cortical thickness across time
  • slowed white matter growth and poorer integrity
  • disrupted network efficiency
  • poorer impulse and attentional control, learning, memory...

During the COVID-19 pandemic, countries around the world have introduced lockdown restrictions and social distancing measures to reduce the spread of the virus. Researchers are keen to understand how these policies and new measures have influenced drinking behaviours within particular groups. Experiences of childhood trauma (abuse and neglect) are disproportionately higher in those with opioid use disorder (OUD). Childhood trauma may affect the reinforcing and rewarding properties of opioid drugs and responses to pain, potentially via developmental changes to the endogenous opioid system.
