International day against drug abuse and illicit trafficking

Jaswinder Singh Sidhu - 26 June 2020

History of Drug AbuseAs drugs have been abused for hundreds of years all over the world, their effects have been felt for just as long.

As drugs have been abused for hundreds of years all over the world, their effects have been felt for just as long. Since drugs have been used, there were always those who abused them, which led to full-blown addiction and the bevy of side effects that come with it. As the physical and mental health implications of addiction became clearer, rehabilitation efforts began to appear. As a result, the history of rehabilitation in the United States dates back...

Shared by Livia - 19 November 2019
Format
News

The rot in Northeast India’s substance abuse problem runs deep. A recent study shows that the prevalence of any type of substance abuse - smoking, smokeless tobacco products, alcohol - in men in Northeastern states is much higher (20 percent more) than the rest of India.

But education and participation in activities such as sports and music can go a long way in curbing substance abuse in the region, according to study authors Nandita Saikia and Benjamin Debbarma of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), New Delhi.

Shared by Livia - 19 November 2019
Format
News

New research explores some of the long-term impacts of marijuana use in families. The study revealed that the children of parents who reported marijuana use during their teenage years were significantly more likely to report substance use than the children of those who did not.

The results also indicated that children whose parents reported a history of marijuana use later on in adulthood had children slightly more likely to have lower grades and attentional difficulties, but who were no more likely to report substance use than their peers.
