INTRODUCTION: Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome (NAS) is a condition unique to a newborn that results from the abrupt cessation of chronic intrauterine drug exposure following birth. Slightly persistent, late onsetting, or slowly fading-out symptoms’ manifestation may take weeks or months. In case the infant is not kept in the biological family, one possible subsequent placement after discharge from hospital in the Czech Republic is a Temporary Foster Care Institution called Pěstounská péče na přechodnou dobu (TFCI). It is unclear what knowledge, education, and experience TFCI caregivers have in...

NICE

Latest quality standard published sets out how health and care services can improve the diagnosis, assessment, and prevention of foetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD).

The quality standard highlights five key areas for improvement:

  • Pregnant women are given advice throughout pregnancy not to drink alcohol.
  • Pregnant women are asked about their alcohol use throughout their pregnancy, and this is recorded.
  • Children and young people with probable prenatal alcohol exposure and significant physical, developmental, or behavioural difficulties are referred for assessment.
  • Children and young...

Lifelong consequences of prenatal drug exposure

NDARC

This webinar explored the issues of infants withdrawing from maternal drugs of addiction, and problems beyond the newborn period.

Newborn drug withdrawal is often attributed to maternal opioids, but many other drugs can cause serious problems in the newborn infant. The impact of prenatal substance exposure extends beyond the newborn period and may have serious long-term consequences on the infant until adulthood.

Early identification, intervention and awareness of the potential problems caused by maternal drug exposure is vital to minimise the harm of prenatal drug exposure on infants.

The focus of this seminar is on prescription smoking cessation pharmacotherapies, which include nicotine replacement therapy patches, varenicline and bupropion.

Dr Alys Havard presents data on the number of Australian women who use these medicines during pregnancy, and their findings regarding the risk of adverse birth outcomes associated with the use of each of these medicines during pregnancy.

She will also show how nicotine replacement therapy patches and varenicline compare in terms of effectiveness when used during pregnancy. We addressed these research questions using linked routinely...

"Challenges in accurately assessing prenatal alcohol exposure in a study of Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder in a youth detention center." Alcoholism: Clinical and Experimental Research (2018).

Foetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) is a diagnostic term used to describe physical, neurodevelopmental, and cognitive impairments that have occurred following exposure to alcohol during pregnancy. The diagnosis of FASD requires a complex assessment and confirmation of maternal alcohol consumption during pregnancy. Obtaining accurate and reliable assessment results can be difficult.

Researchers from the University of Western Australia have conducted a study to assess the challenges practitioners face when trying to gain information about prenatal alcohol exposure as part of a broader FASD...

Summary

What is already known about this topic?

In 2014, in the United States, an infant with neonatal abstinence syndrome (NAS) was born every 15 minutes. Historically, NAS surveillance has depended on hospital discharge data, frequently with a time lag, limiting ability to rapidly direct public health resources.

What is added by this report?

Among six identified states with mandated NAS reporting laws during 2013–2017, NAS incidence could be quantified to inform programs and services. However, differences in reporting methods and case definitions might influence states’ abilities to...
