The National Centre for Clinical Research on Emerging Drugs of Concern (NCCRED) is an exciting new direction for the Australian alcohol and other drugs treatment sector. With an emphasis on partnership building, it aims to embed research in clinical practice to develop new treatments for disorders due to methamphetamine and other emerging drugs of concern.

The Research Officer will be part of a passionate team of authors. Together with research investigators and Centre staff, the Research Officer will coordinate the written outputs of NCCRED, and draft high-level written communication for scientific, government and general public audiences.

University of Sheffield have an exciting opportunity in the School of Health and Related Reseach (ScHARR) for highly-motivated researcher to join an on-going project studying the decline in alcohol consumption among young people.

You will play a key role in a large, mixed-methods project by analysing qualitative data that has already been generated through interviews with young people and adults from four age groups in England. You will also collaborate closely with quantitative researchers working on the same project and researchers working on similar projects in other countries to produce complementary and mixed-methods research outputs. The project will provide excellent opportunities for you to engage with policy stakeholders, participate in generating research impact, and develop your own research ideas within a supportive, flexible and friendly environment.

You will be based in the Sheffield Alcohol Research Group, a multidisciplinary team of approximately 25 researchers with an international reputation for high impact research of outstanding scientific merit. You should have excellent qualitative analysis skills, a good awareness of the principles of quantitative research and a strong interest in understanding trends in young people’s health-related behaviours.

This position will collaborate with other team colleagues in analyzing ASAM’s CONTINUUM data repository of individuals with substance use disorders (SUDs), conducting quality improvement reviews, proposing updates and new features, and generating reports for providers, treatment systems, and government and payer systems.

This Scientific Consultant position will report to the Chief Architect of the ASAM CONTINUUM system and will work with an established team of PhD-level scientists, master clinicians, technology experts, project managers and support staff. The work involves ongoing analyses of extensive clinical data, including repeated measures, to develop and generate reports for county, state and justice systems for purposes of resource allocation and quality improvement of decision rules, guidelines, and training.

This will include exploring opportunities for leveraging the ASAM CONTINUUM database for scientific research studies and quality measure development and testing.

The Prevention Research Center of the Pacific Institute for Research and Evaluation and the School of Public Health at the University of California, Berkeley are seeking applicants for three-year postdoctoral fellowships in the Prevention Science Research Training Program funded by the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism.

The fellowships provide training for individuals who wish to pursue careers in prevention science research with an emphasis on health and social problems related to the use and abuse of alcohol and other substances. The program provides requisite training for early-career scientists in the multiple theoretical and methodological approaches to prevention research that are necessary to pursue successful careers in this field.

Individuals from a broad range of social and behavioural science disciplines (e.g., psychology, sociology, economics, anthropology, public health, epidemiology, and ethnic studies) are encouraged to apply. Applicants need not have a history of working in alcohol prevention.

Seminars and trainees’ participation in the program will be conducted virtually until the COVID-19 pandemic is resolved. Until that time onsite residency is not required.

Project Title: Overdose Detection & Responder Alert Technologies (ODART) Study

The University of St Andrews are seeking to recruit an enthusiastic post-doctoral researcher with experience in knowledge translation, implementation, realist evaluations or quality improvement methodologies. Knowledge of complex health interventions particularly those using telehealth platforms is desirable.

The University of Bristol have an exciting new opportunity for a talented researcher to join the CRUK Integrative Cancer Epidemiology Programme (ICEP) on a project entitled “Towards improved causal evidence and enhanced prediction of cancer risk and survival” at the University of Bristol to work on smoking cessation in relation to cancer risk and progression.

The postholder will be responsible for designing, planning, executing and disseminating Mendelian Randomization analyses to:

i) evaluate the effects of nicotine and non-nicotine constituents of smoking on cancer incidence and cancer progression, and

ii) evaluate the effect of stopping smoking on cancer progression.

They will also conduct work integrating DNA methylation to investigate the potential health effects of e-cigarette use and for predicting future risk of cancer.

The aims of the project

The Drugs Research Network Scotland (DRNS) is funded by the Scottish Government to help inform policy and practice that will reduce the harms associated with drug use in Scotland. We are committed to the meaningful involvement of people with lived/living experience of drug use, and affected family members, throughout our work. We engage with a wide range of stakeholders to:

  • develop collaborative research projects to address key information needs. These collaborations include people with lived/living experience, affected family members, academics, health and care service providers, service planners and decision/policy makers.
  • secure funding to deliver these projects across Scotland, the rest of the UK and internationally.
  • share learning from our and other peoples’ research to help inform the Scottish response to problem drug use.

An opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic person to work on an Economic and Social Research Council funded project which explores the nature, creation, impact and regulation of gendered alcohol brand and nightlife marketing in the age of ‘contemporary feminism’. 

The research aims to improve our understanding of how such marketing affects alcohol use, and experiences of the night-time economy, with the aim of engaging with key stakeholders (e.g. young people, NGOs, policy makers, industry) to help make venues healthier, safer, and more inclusive. It will examine the gendered nature of alcohol brand and nightlife industry marketing and how this has changed in recent years as a result of the re-emergence of feminism(s), and the increasing use of ‘cause marketing’ by brands.

The appointee will participate in an ambitious project over two years to explore the interactions of English local governments with harmful commodity industries such as food which is considered unhealthy, alcohol, tobacco and gambling industries.

The aim of the proposed work is to better understand the nature and extent of such interactions in local government, explore stakeholder views on this issue and the need for guidance, and present the evidence in the format of potential guiding principles for local authority interactions with corporations that market products that are damaging to health.
