Consultant, Alcohol Control, Manila - WHO

Shared by Olivia Woodrow - 17 August 2025
Job deadline
27 August 2025
Country
Philippines

A consultant is needed to support country and regional efforts on alcohol control through technical assistance, policy development, stakeholder engagement, and strategic communications, aligned with regional priorities and WHO frameworks.

Alcohol use remains a leading preventable risk factor for noncommunicable diseases (NCDs), injuries, and social harms across the Western Pacific Region. It contributes to over 200 disease and injury conditions, and every minute, one person dies from alcohol-related harm in the Region. The WHO Regional Office for the Western Pacific, through the NCD Prevention and Health Promotion (PND) Unit under the Division of Healthy Environments and Populations (DHP), supports Member States in implementing evidence-based interventions to reduce alcohol use and its associated burden.

To accelerate progress, WHO is scaling up technical support to countries in conducting situation analyses, mapping stakeholders, and strengthening cross-sectoral collaboration. This includes facilitating technical briefings and workshops, developing policy briefs, and providing hands-on technical review of draft policy instruments such as legislation, fiscal measures, and monitoring frameworks.

At the regional level, WHO is also intensifying efforts to promote alcohol control through strategic engagement with Member States and technical teams. This includes preparing for the alcohol control agenda of the Regional Committee Meeting, aligning with regional strategies and acceleration initiatives, and developing tailored communications toolkits to engage the public and policymakers. The consultant will also support inter-country learning, documentation of success stories, and finalisation of regional publications and workshops.

This consultancy requires a technically skilled and strategically minded expert with demonstrated experience in alcohol control policy, stakeholder engagement, and public health communications. Familiarity with the WHO Global Alcohol Action Plan 2022–2030, the SAFER initiative, and regional NCD frameworks is essential.

Postdoctoral fellow - National Institute of Mental Health, Bethesda, MD

Shared by Olivia Woodrow - 17 August 2025
Job deadline
7 September 2025
Country
United States

We have an opening for a postdoctoral fellow to join my lab at the National Institute of Mental Health at the NIH campus in Bethesda, MD. Research in the lab is focused on the computational neuroscience of reward prediction and learning. Broadly, we study how timing, inference processes and goal selection modulate learning in reward-guided tasks in animals and humans, and how these processes are instantiated in neural activity across the reward learning circuits of the brain. Our goal is to understand how reward learning is altered in compulsive behaviors, addiction, and motivational deficits in disorders of mental health. We are looking for a postdoc who is interested in developing approaches from reinforcement learning, dynamical systems theory, and Bayesian inference to understand the online regulation of reward prediction and learning in neural activity and behavior. We work with a broad network of collaborating labs that span rodent, NHP and human studies, and the ideal candidate will be comfortable working in a highly interdisciplinary environment to pursue novel and translational insights into the neural basis of reward learning. This opening is an excellent opportunity for a computational neuroscientist who wishes to apply theoretical ideas to understand empirical data, with the opportunity to collaborate on novel paradigms to test computational models of reward-guided behavior and reward learning in the brain.

Research Associate - Drug Policy Alliance

Shared by Olivia Woodrow - 10 August 2025
Job deadline
29 August 2025
Country
United States

The Drug Policy Alliance (DPA) addresses the harms of drug use and drug criminalization through policy solutions, organizing, and public education. We advocate for a holistic approach to drugs that prioritizes health, social supports, and community wellbeing. DPA opposes punitive approaches that destabilize people, block access to care, and drain communities of resources. We believe that the regulation of drugs should be grounded in evidence, health, equity, and human rights. In collaboration with other movements, we change laws, advance justice, and save lives.

DPA has 40 staff across the U.S. an annual operating budget of approximately $12 million, and 200,000 members, activists, and supporters. The organization has a solid track record of success at the local, state, and federal levels and consistent visibility in prominent media and policy circles.

Recognizing the broad reach of the drug war, DPA works across issue areas to engage more deeply with organizations and leaders in immigration, family policing, education, reproductive justice, housing, and other aligned spaces. This commitment to building power across movements and building a base contributes to and works in tandem with DPA’s work on policy and legislative change.

The Role:

The Department of Research and Academic Engagement (DRAE) works to bridge the divide between research and effective drug policies. We provide research support to our policy colleagues to ensure that we’re promoting the most evidence-based policies; we mobilize academics to engage in policy advocacy and speak with the media; we work with academics to transform the drug research landscape by conducting policy-relevant research; and we host events where we platform the latest drug policy data and research.

The Research Associate will help advance DRAE’s work in supporting scholars in doing advocacy, convening experts from a range of disciplines to inform the field, and strengthening DPA’s use of research and scholarship in developing and advancing its policy positions. Responsibilities include research, analysis, and writing; outreach and relationship building; event planning; tracking and disseminating research; and administrative support to the DRAE team
