The Behavioural Research Unit (BRU)

The Behavioural Research Unit (BRU) carries out behavioural research for multiple government departments and agencies, as well as for the OECD and European Commission. It specialises in designing and conducting laboratory, online and field experiments to diagnose policy problems and test potential solutions. Some qualitative research is also undertaken. Much of the BRU’s work focuses on behaviours linked to financial, environmental and health outcomes.

Role Description

The successful candidate will join a team of approximately eight economists and psychologists. It relies on strong teamwork and the successful candidate will reflect this. The job will be to design, programme and conduct experiments tailored to the investigation of economic decisions and behaviours of relevance to policy. The post requires strong quantitative and experimental research skills. Experiments are likely to involve a mixture of laboratory, online and field studies. Some qualitative work may also be involved. The BRU relies on strong teamwork and the successful candidate will reflect that.

Responsibilities

The post holder will work under the Consultant Psychiatrist for the service and have the responsibility to work with a multi-disciplinary team to provide holistic care for service users.

The post-holder will contribute to the service to ensure that service users consistently receive high-quality services that adhere to the best practice guidelines and achieve high professional standards. They will be responsible for contributing to the overall performance of the service to ensure that contractual output targets are achieved. They will be required to record and input client data and information in order that the service operates within contractual, administrative and financial requirements.

The successful candidate will be expected to provide a constant stimulus for improving clinical services and be a role model. They will have a recovery-focussed approach to treatment.
The successful candidate will be able to access a well-developed monthly CPD program, receive regular structured supervision and be fully supported in the appraisal and revalidation structure. All doctors within CGL receive weekly protected CPD and are encouraged and supported to get involved in clinical audit and research. The Department of Preventive Medicine is a large, interdisciplinary department that conducts large single-site and multi-site clinical trials as well as observational studies. We are seeking a fellow with interests in child, adolescent, and young adult development; substance misuse and co-occurring internalizing and externalizing problems; evidence-based prevention programs and policies; advanced longitudinal and evaluation research methods; and community engagement.

The fellow will primarily work with W. Alex Mason, PhD. The candidate will have the opportunity to collaborate with other faculty inside and outside the Department of Preventive Medicine. The position will be for one year, renewable up to three years depending on productivity.

Title: Women, Alcohol and Breast Cancer Prevention

Context: Consuming alcohol increases the risk of breast cancer (alcohol is a class 1 carcinogenic). Women in midlife are amongst Australia’s heaviest alcohol consumers. Acceptance of communication about the breast cancer risk associated with alcohol consumption is complex. Uptake and response to risk-based messaging hinges on whether women perceive themselves to be personally at risk of or a ‘candidate’ for cancer.

Description: For this PhD, numerous possible topics might be explored within the theme of alcohol-related risk and breast cancer ‘candidacy’. The PhD candidate will devise an original project in collaboration with the research team, depending on the candidate’s disciplinary and research interests.

The Healthy Brain and Mind Research Centre aims to advance knowledge critical to improving mental health, performance and well-being.

The Senior Technical Officer will join a high-quality research team. The role will provide high-level technical support to researchers in the Neuroscience of Addiction and Mental Health Program.

We have an opportunity for a full-time Research Fellow in Conflict and Mental Health to work on the five-year Wellcome Trust funded project (CHANGE) which seeks to address alcohol misuse and mental health co-morbidities among conflict-affected populations in Uganda and Ukraine. 

The aim of CHANGE is to develop a new psychological intervention to reduce alcohol use disorders (AUDs) and co-occurring psychological problems in conflict-affected populations. The new intervention will build upon the World Health Organization’s (WHO) intervention “Problem Management Plus” (PM+). CHANGE seeks to complement PM+ with evidence-based strategies addressing alcohol misuse. We will test effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of the new intervention (called PM+/AUD) through two randomised controlled trials in Uganda and Ukraine. Project partners include HealthRight International Uganda, the University of Copenhagen, and the National University of Kyiv-Mohyla.
