Question: Is electronic cigarette (e-cigarette) use among tobacco-naive youths associated with subsequent risk of cigarette initiation?

Findings: In this cohort study using data from the Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health Study (2013-2016), youths whose first tobacco product was an e-cigarette were more likely to initiate cigarettes over 2 years of follow-up. At the population level, approximately 180 000 new ever smokers and 45 000 current smokers in the United States over 2 years may have started smoking combustible cigarettes after initiating e-cigarette use.

According to a study recently published by Roee Astor and colleagues (Astor RL, Urman R, Barrington-Trimis JL, et al. Tobacco Retail Licensing and Youth Product Use. Pediatrics. 2019;143(2):e20173536), in the medical journal Pediatrics, teenagers who live in communities with strong tobacco vendor licensing requirements could be at lower risk of tobacco use.

What is already known about this topic?

Exposure to secondhand tobacco smoke can cause sudden infant death syndrome, respiratory infections, ear infections, and asthma attacks in infants and children, and coronary heart disease, stroke, and lung cancer in adult nonsmokers.

What is added by this report?

Although secondhand smoke exposure among U.S. nonsmokers declined from 87.5% to 25.2% during 1988–2014, one in four nonsmokers, including 14 million children, were exposed to secondhand smoke during 2013–2014.

Este estudio muestra que en Cataluña, tres de cada cien bajas por enfermedad no profesional registradas entre los años 2007 y 2016 son atribuibles al tabaco.
