NICE

Latest quality standard published sets out how health and care services can improve the diagnosis, assessment, and prevention of foetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD).

The quality standard highlights five key areas for improvement:

  • Pregnant women are given advice throughout pregnancy not to drink alcohol.
  • Pregnant women are asked about their alcohol use throughout their pregnancy, and this is recorded.
  • Children and young people with probable prenatal alcohol exposure and significant physical, developmental, or behavioural difficulties are referred for assessment.

Lifelong consequences of prenatal drug exposure

Shared by Edie - 8 November 2021

NDARC

This webinar explored the issues of infants withdrawing from maternal drugs of addiction, and problems beyond the newborn period.

Newborn drug withdrawal is often attributed to maternal opioids, but many other drugs can cause serious problems in the newborn infant. The impact of prenatal substance exposure extends beyond the newborn period and may have serious long-term consequences on the infant until adulthood.

Early identification, intervention and awareness of the potential problems caused by maternal drug exposure is vital to minimise the harm of prenatal drug exposure on infants.
