About the Opportunity

As a Senior Addiction Research Scientist, you will drive progress with the multidisciplinary WVU Rockefeller Neuroscience Institute’s Innovation Center team. You will be part of an exciting collaborative effort at an R1 institution working towards innovative solutions to advance the science and clinical research around addiction.  In this role, your efforts will directly support the current and future research related to addiction medicine to advance rapidly evolving work of six-year-old Institute that has already performed 11 first in human clinical trials, and seen exponential growth in publications, grants, and IP for work that provide a foundation to improve lives of people in West Virginia and around the globe.

This position will advance the research and development missions of West Virginia University by providing the necessary skills for the coordination and implementation of operational tasks related to several research and development projects focused on neuromodulation brain therapeutics that are essential to the research activities of the WVU Rockefeller Neuroscience Institute.

What You'll Do

  • Work with the RNI Innovation Center substance use disorder research team to carry out research projects and clinical trials focused on understanding and improving substance use disorder patients’ outcomes.
  • Utilize tools such as electrophysiological, neuromodulation, cognitive batteries, and subjective questionnaires to measure, assess, and improve the monitoring, assessment, and treatment of substance use disorder. 
  • Meet with research participants to describe research protocols, gain informed consent, carry out follow-up visits and other duties as outlined in the research protocols.  
  • Design and oversee the implementation of substance use disorder studies, ensuring that research protocols are scientifically rigorous and ethically sound.
  • Supervise researchers and technicians, providing guidance and training on study protocols.
  • Manage the day-to-day operations of the addiction research program.
  • Present research findings at conferences and publish in peer-reviewed journals
  • Provide mentorship and guidance to junior researchers and students involved in the program
  • Stay abreast of developments in the field of substance use disorders, neuromodulation, integrating new knowledge into the program's research agenda

Are you 18-25 with experience of substance use and/or mental health problems? Do you want to use your experience to help shape our research? Are you interested in supporting others to have their say? Do you want to develop your skills and add to your CV?

We are looking for 2 passionate and enthusiastic Interns who can work with us on a flexible basis. This Internship offers the opportunity to work at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health Research (CAMHR) alongside the Patient and Public Involvement & Engagement (PPIE) Co-ordinators to involve those with lived experience in the development of the research. The Internship is based at The University of Hull but will also require working within the community.

The aim of the new centre is to develop the University of Hull’s addiction and mental health research so people and services benefit. We will target national priorities and the mental health needs of our local population, resulting in better access to care and treatment that works.

Our plan involves individuals with lived experience of addiction and mental health problems as well as local groups. Patients and the public will be involved in the development of our research and helping us to understand the results of our projects. The Internships will be working across the following theme:

Young people with substance use and mental health problems: We aim to improve care pathways for young people (i.e. 10-18 years) with substance use and mental health problems who often miss out in getting the help they need.

The new Centre will deliver benefits to people in our local area in the following ways:

  • More people with substance use and mental health problems will be able to get involved in health research that will change services and improve outcomes.
  • Involve the voices of people with lived experience and those of their family and carers.
  • Explore best practice for increasing access and improving outcomes for those experiencing substance use and mental health problems.

What is PPIE?

Patient and Public Involvement and Engagement entails research teams engaging with members of the public to shape how the research is carried out. This is often individuals with lived experience of the research topic, who can provide first-hand perspectives on the needs of those who the research impacts.

PPIE Co-ordinators

A PPIE Co-ordinator is a member of staff working alongside the research team who builds the bridge between researchers and the public. The role of the PPIE Co-ordinator is to facilitate public involvement in research and ensure that perspectives and experiences are considered in decision making.

What the Internship offers:

  • 3-6 months’ worth of experience working within an academic setting
  • The hours per week will depend on the level of work required at that time but we can be flexible around other commitments. As this role involves working with young people, this will include some evening and weekend work.
  • The opportunity to develop a range of skills working within the research field
  • Experience of working in face-to-face environments with individuals and groups who have lived experience of drug/alcohol use and mental health problems
  • The opportunity to use your own knowledge and experience to work with those in similar circumstances

  • An hourly rate of £15.09 + holiday pay

What is required to be an Intern:

  • You must be between the ages of 18 and 25 as this role is specifically focused on providing a young person’s perspective for the benefit of other young people.
  • Have lived experience of substance use and/or mental health problems. This could be your own experience of one of these issues, or that of a friend/family member.
  • Can bring a creative element to the research and public involvement
  • Qualified to Level 3 or equivalent, including GCSE English and Maths
  • Is familiar with Microsoft and online tools

Tasks involved:

  • Reading and reviewing documents
  • Developing creative activities to engage with young people with lived experience
  • Assisting the delivery of PPI activities
  • Talking to young people with lived experience of drug/alcohol use and mental health problems who are engaged with the research
  • Providing your lived experience view during different aspects of the research to the PPIE Co-ordinators and Research Fellows
  • Administrative and computer-based tasks

A Research Assistant I position is currently available in Dr. Kent Kiehl’s laboratory at The Mind Research Network in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Duties include working with a research team on several grant funded studies grant-funded studies designed to evaluate neurobehavioral characteristics of incarcerated criminal offenders with antisocial (e.g., psychopathic) traits, substance use disorders, and/or past traumatic events (including traumatic brain injury). Our studies also investigate the impact of treatment (e.g., mindfulness, cognitive skills training) as well long-term outcomes post-release from incarceration. The RAI will assist with recruiting, scheduling, and screening study participants, file scanning, data entry, and various data management projects (coding, scoring, etc). Depending on interests and experience, training may also be provided in in the administration and scoring of clinical interviews and neuropsychological tests, and/or collecting/analyzing brain imaging (e.g., functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI)) data. All candidates should possess strong interest in research with incarcerated populations.

Qualifications

Requires a high school diploma or equivalent and 2 years of relevant experience; or an equivalent combination of education, training and/or experience from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been attained. Individuals with a bachelor’s degree in psychology, or pursuing a degree in a related field are preferred. Those with experience and interest in neuroscience, clinical psychology, and/or neuroimaging are strongly encouraged to apply.

This is an exciting opportunity for someone to contribute to a National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) funded Randomised Controlled Trial in the area of managing drug dependence. The trial is being led by Professor Catriona Matheson at the Centre for Healthcare and Community Research (CHeCR) at the University of Stirling, in close collaboration with The Centre for Healthcare Randomised Trials (CHaRT), University of Aberdeen. This project aims to reduce the use of high-risk street benzodiazepines, which contribute to drug related deaths in people who are also enrolled in Opiate Agonist Treatment (OAT) e.g. methadone. The trial includes at least six sites across Scotland and England with a built-in pilot study, process evaluation and toxicology surveillance study. The research assistant will work closely with the trial’s senior researcher across the needs of the study, with a particular focus on the toxicology study including drug surveillance and scanning and supporting project meetings. They will also contribute to literature reviewing, quantitative data analysis, ongoing communication, report writing and dissemination of outputs. The objective of the ECHO Africa Senior Program Manager position is to work with senior level officials to design, implement and evaluate the ECHO learning approach as a digital learning tool to build capacity and address critical health priorities. Activities will include engaging in strategic planning, and providing focused training, support and guidance to incountry and regional partners to design and implement relevant ECHO programs. As a key member of the ECHO Africa team, the ECHO Africa Senior Program Manager will be responsible for managing the strategic and operational planning, establishment, execution, and evaluation of ECHO programs in multiple countries in Africa.

In alignment with UNM, Project ECHO, ECHO Africa, and the SILC initiative, the ECHO Africa Senior Program Manager will perform the following duties:

1. ECHO Advocacy

  • Participate in the regular review of the ECHO Africa strategic plan in partnership with ECHO Africa Director and staff.
  • Engage with senior MOH and other partners to explore how the ECHO virtual learning model can contribute to training and capacity building efforts to address critical health and education priorities.
  • Work with partners to develop and implement a strategic plan for ECHO in their country/region.
  • Work with team members to support ECHO fundraising efforts.

2. ECHO Coordination

  • Provide strategic and technical guidance and training in the design and implementation of ECHO programs with in-country partners.
  • Serve as a liaison between in-country partners and the UNM ECHO Institute, iECHO support teams, and other stakeholders.

3. ECHO Operations

  • Support ECHO program teams with IT support, site assessments, iECHO on boarding, coordination of sessions, and M&E activities.
  • Facilitate and enhance day-to-day working relations with ECHO program teams, partners and other stakeholders, as appropriate to the position.
  • Prepare monthly and other reports as required.
  • Perform other related duties, as required by the functional supervisor.
  • Travel up to 30% or more may be required based on the program work plan and request for support from country partners.

4. ECHO Capacity Building and Technical Assistance

  • Support ECHO Partner Launch Trainings for partners as needed.
  • Provide ECHO capacity building and operational support as required to in-country ECHO program teams.
  • Provide basic technical assistance as needed to ECHO program teams. Advanced technical support will be available from the ECHO Institute and ECHO India.

The successful applicant will be asked to conduct research transdiagnostic processes in the context of addiction, mental and physical health conditions. The primary purpose of this position is to undertake research on a 3-year NHMRC Ideas grant titled “Reducing alcohol consumption through the sober curious movement”. The Research Fellow will work with a research team from Torrens University Australia (Prof Paul Ward is leading the study), La Trobe University, Monash University, the University of Auckland and Columbia University New York, including Chief Investigators, other funded researchers and PhD students.  This is a 3-stage mixed-methods study: Stage 1 will include a social media analysis of alcohol-free marketing and interviews with producers; Stage 2 will include interviews with high alcohol consuming groups; Stage 3 will co-develop interventions for alcohol reduction. The study aims to understand the social worlds of drinking and the potential for sober curiosity in four 4 heavy drinking ‘case-study’ groups: 1) male construction workers, 2) hospitality sector workers, 3) LGBTQ+ women and 4) tertiary education students (university and TAFE) living in regional areas. This Research Fellow position at Torrens University will primarily be responsible for all stages of the study for ‘male construction workers’ and ‘LGBTQ+ women’ but will also be required to contribute to the other two case-study groups when required.

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a dynamic and innovative individual to join the Cwm Taf Morgannwg Local Public Health Team working as a Principal Public Health Practitioner.

This is a strategic role focusing on substance use, jointly funded by the Cwm Taf Morgannwg Area Planning Board (APB) and Cwm Taf Morgannwg University Health Board (CTMUHB) and hosted by the CTMUHB Public Health Team.

The role will work closely with the officers of the APB, and as a senior member of the CTMUHB Public Health Team. Alcohol and drugs are lead contributors to morbidity and mortality within our region, and there is an urgent need to build our strategic approach.

The post holder will be a member of the strategic group of the CTMUHB Public Health Team and provide public health expertise to the work of the APB, working in close partnership with the APB officers, who are hosted by Rhondda Cynon Taf County Borough Council.

We are committed to agile working and will involve home working alongside working in office sites across Cwm Taf Morgannwg, including co-locating with APB officers in Rhondda Cynon Taff.

Main duties of the job

The role will be responsible for:

  • Raising the profile of the substance use agenda regionally and within CTMUHB.

Background

This post will be funded by a multi-million pound award from Wellcome Leap programme awarded to the University of Birmingham to study Untangling Addiction. Our project, entitled “Predicting persistent opioid usage after surgery: Integrating multi-omics, neurobiology, and AI-interviews".

Our research programme aims to address persistent opioid usage by identifying molecular, neurobiological and cognitive signatures characterizing patients at risk of prolonged opioid use post-surgery.

Role Summary

This post-doctoral research will be conducted in collaboration with a multidisciplinary team of experts in the fields of neuroscience, immunology, pain, anaesthesia, and machine learning. 

Supervision will be provided by Prof. Ali Mazaheri, as well as Prof. Fang Gao Smith, and Prof. Helen McGettrick.

The successful candidate will have a strong background in psychology, cognitive science and multi-modal data integration. Experience, in particular in combining different modalities (longitudinal data, multi-omics, EEGs, NLP, etc.), is a clear advantage.

We are seeking two full time research assistants on fixed-term contracts until 31/10/2029 with the NIHR Mental Health Research Groups-funded Centre for Addiction and Mental Health Research at the University of Hull. The successful candidates will become part of a larger interdisciplinary team of researchers investigating addiction and mental health conditions. Under the leadership of Professor Thomas Phillips, Professor of Nursing in Addiction and Professor Judith Cohen, Hull Health Trials Unit, the research team has secured a five-year award, supported by our partners at the University of York and King’s College London, to develop addiction and mental health research based at the University of Hull. The research targets national priorities and the mental health needs of our population with the aim of improving access to care and treatment that works. Working closely with health and social care providers as well as patients and the public, we have developed an ambitious programme of research across three themes:

Theme 1: Improving care pathways and outcomes for young people with substance use and mental health problems

Theme 2: Improving care pathways for adults with substance use disorder and mental health problems presenting to places of safety and emergency departments

Theme 3: Defining the needs of adults with alcohol-related cognitive impairment 

The posts will provide flexible support across the themes, with an initial focus on themes 2 and 3. The roles will be varied and will include supporting systematic and scoping reviews, assisting with the development of research protocols and study documents and seeking regulatory approvals, and supporting the delivery of research projects through the recruitment of participants and collection of data.

We are seeking exceptional graduates with experience of literature reviews, data collection and analysis and drafting research reports. The successful candidates will join a thriving community of researchers examining the impact of addiction and mental health problems on health, social care and criminal justice settings. The research assistants will support the research fellows, co-investigators and patient and public contributors to collate the evidence base and assist in the development and delivery of research projects.

The posts will be based in the award winning Allam Medical Building, University of Hull. The Centre for Addiction and Mental Health Research is part of the thriving academic community within the Faculty of Health Sciences including postgraduates studying PhDs. The research team provides outstanding methodological expertise in high-quality clinical and applied health research.

The ideal candidates will have excellent verbal and written communication skills, knowledge and skills in relation to conducting literature reviews, experience in delivering clinical research, and experience engaging with vulnerable people in clinical or research settings.
