The Division of Health Research (DHR) within Lancaster University’s Faculty of Health and Medicine is advertising a Research Associate position, working in the Spectrum Centre for Mental Health Research.   

This project offers a unique opportunity to train the police and homeless service staff in how to engage people in a conversation about their drinking, to deliver brief alcohol interventions and to provide effective referrals into services that can provide support. The Blue Light project was developed by Alcohol Change UK, as an approach for working with problem drinkers who are not in contact with alcohol treatment services. As part of this study, the Blue Light training package will be tailored for a non-healthcare context.

As the researcher running this project you will: 

  • Lead co-production activities to tailor the Blue Light training, 
  • Organise the delivery of the Blue Light training sessions across the police and homeless services in Liverpool,
  • Deliver a feasibility study to evaluate this intervention, 
  • Conduct interviews with police officers and homeless service staff to understand how it has affected their attitudes, perceptions of stigma around alcohol use and working practices.

Project Title: Understanding overdose risk perception amongst those who use heroin and other drugs.

This PhD project investigates the perception and management of risk for those who use multiple drugs on occasion (polydrug use).

This PhD project aims to understand the lived experience of managing polydrug overdose risk though the lens of those who use drugs. The PhD researcher will be supervised by Dr Gillian Shorter and Dr Anne Campbell (Queen’s University Belfast), but will benefit from the mentorship, support, contacts, and interactions with the wider Drug and Alcohol Research Network. This research will directly feed into priorities to reduce drug-related deaths in Northern Ireland and wider afield, linking to Department of Health and Drug-Related Deaths Taskforce research needs. There will be the opportunity to present to these and other bodies on the findings of the research to support policy change and improved understanding.

The Unit wishes to recruit a Stop Smoking Practitioner to provide the day-to-day specialist tobacco cessation support to the residents of Waltham Forest.

The post holders will join a team of comprising Researchers, Stop Smoking Advisors, Clinicians and support staff. 

Key duties of the role include:

  • To provide intensive support for smokers and tobacco users using Pharmacotherapies and behavioural support to targeted segments of the population (as stated in the service specification) who have complex needs i.e. COPD, MH/SMI and pregnancy. 
  • Maintaining motivation of clients during times of emotional distress. Occasional exposure to distressing/highly distressing circumstances for example: Clients – diagnosis of chronic or terminal illness/disease, clients suffering from mental health problems, clients or clients’ families’ addiction to other drugs/substances.
  • Communicate complex and sensitive information to clients in a culturally sensitive manner. To provide a culturally sensitive approach to cessation by sensitivity towards the protected characteristics in accordance with Equalities and Diversity Policies. 
  • Maintaining resources for outreach sessions, workshops, presentations and community events in the form of a display board, leaflets posters, CO monitor, NRT samples and paperwork.

Job Duties

  • Execute the strategic plan as developed by the board of directors
  • Manage day-to-day operations of 501c(3), and ensure compliance to non-profit organizational standards

  • Seek out grants, contracts, and other funding sources to support ICUDDR activities and actively identify appropriate sources towards on-going and planning activities

  • Ensure delivery of an annual conference in coordination with the conference program committee
  • Participate and provide presentations at meetings and conferences (domestic, international) related to ICUDDR and partner organizations

  • Ensure completion of work plans of regional work groups
  • Collaborate with partner organizations to establish university networks, to develop academic programs in addiction studies, and other activities to meet the organization mission
  • Outreach with universities to engage them as ICUDDR members, and to expand the network of partner universities
  • Create networking opportunities for universities to share information regarding academic programs in addiction studies, and develop processes for communication between member universities including regional partnerships and supporting regional networking through regional work groups

The incumbent will work under the supervision of the UNODC Regional Representative, Regional Office for Southeast Asia and the Pacific (ROSEAP), in Bangkok, Thailand, and the overall guidance of the Deputy Director of the Division for Operations (DO) at UNODC Headquarters, Vienna.

Responsibilities

Within delegated authority, the incumbent will perform the following specific duties:

  • Keep abreast with the latest developments and trends in Myanmar regarding all areas under UNODC mandates and advise on possible policy and operational responses.
  • Represent UNODC’s position and interests in Myanmar and liaise with Government’s institutions (in line with the common UN position), civil society, regional and international aid agencies and financial institutions, and the media.
  • Represent UNODC within the UN Country Team and other relevant fora in Myanmar and build effective partnerships with UN entities, including joint programmes, ensuring that UNODC’s mandates are fully reflected in the wider programme of work and UN initiatives in the country. 
  • Build effective relationship with the Secretary-General’s Special Envoy for Myanmar, the Resident Coordinator in Myanmar and other senior UN managers in the country.
  • Manage, supervise, plan, develop, monitor, evaluate and report on UNODC programme/project activities. Manage budget, finance, administration and procurement related functions in accordance with UN rules and regulations. 
  • Ensure effective monitoring and collection of data on programme implementation, and contribute to national, regional and global efforts to show UNODC’s contribution to wider UN efforts and the Sustainable Development Goals.
  • Draft reports and position papers related to operational activities, as well as visibility/communication material, and as necessary, provide input to UNODC management for the analysis of related development and policy issues.
  • Develop and implement a resource mobilization strategy and build partnerships aimed at broadening the donor base, and promoting long-term involvement and financial, in-kind support and resources by national, regional and international public and private sector donors to support UNODC’s work in Myanmar. 
  • Ensure regular communication with all project donors and ensure that reporting obligations and other obligations towards the donors are fulfilled in a timely manner.
  • Lead UNODC advocacy and awareness raising efforts in Myanmar and contribute to such efforts at the regional and global levels.
  • Ensure timely and efficient project management, including project and budget revisions, reporting and monitoring, and negotiations with external counterparts.
  • Coordinate and liaise with ROSEAP staff and relevant UNODC Headquarters’ Branches and Sections, as well as with other relevant international, regional, national and non-governmental actors, to facilitate programme implementation and create synergies/partnerships.
  • Contribute to safety and security of UNODC personnel in Myanmar, in line with the framework of accountability.
  • Support ROSEAP management in developing strategic narratives on Myanmar’s relevance at the regional level with regards to challenges related to UNODC mandates.
  • Advise the Regional Representative and senior management on political trends and challenges in Myanmar.
  • Supervise programme/project staff and related personnel.

GSSMS is a community based service that provides treatment for drug and/or alcohol dependent adults aged 18 and over. GSSMS provides an extensive treatment and case management service to people experiencing problems with substance use and associated complexities including mental health, physical health, pregnancy and child protection issues.

The successful candidate will work with service users to comprehensively assess their needs and develop an appropriate care plan. This will aim to address their physical and psychological well-being in addition to their substance misuse.

Responsibility

A Drug Abuse Treatment Specialist is primarily responsible for delivering services to incarcerated individuals in an effort to help them overcome substance use problems.  He/she will provide direct services within residential and non-residential substance use treatment programs in a correctional facility.  He/she conducts group and individual counseling, instructs drug education classes, develops treatment plans, applies assessment and treatment techniques, and develops discharge reports and follow-up treatment plans for inmates who are releasing to the community.

Experience Required

A Drug Abuse Treatment Specialist must have the ability to provide counseling in either a group or individual setting. He/she must have experiencing learning and applying new assessment and treatment techniques and use these techniques to develop rapport and advance treatment goals during counseling. During group counseling, he/she is required to simultaneously monitor the behavior of participants and facilitate the group process. He/she must understand the nature of addiction to effectively plan and implement treatment for participants. Additionally, he/she must possess knowledge of the concepts, principles, theories and social problems associated with addiction. He/she must have experience writing comprehensive treatment plan, treatment progress reports, discharge summaries, and other clinical documentation.

Qualifications

To qualify for a GS-9 position, the applicant must have 12 semester hours or graduate course work in clinical psychology, counseling psychology, or social work including three (3) semester hours as an intern/practicum student in a clinical treatment setting. OR 12 months, full-time professional experience in treating (i.e., developing treatment plans, conducting individual and group therapy) individual with mental health and/or substance use disorders. To qualify for the GS-11 position, the applicant must have 24 semester hours or graduate course work in clinical psychology, counseling psychology, or social work including six (6) semester hours as an intern/practicum student in a clinical treatment setting. Essential Functions of Position:

  • Serves as senior lead on the counseling team and provides support to the Clinical Director as needed. 

  • Orients and trains new Counselors and Recovery Support Navigator

  • Participates in staff/supervision meetings, attends related professional development sessions/training and periodic reviews. 

  • Available for on-call rotations, weekend and holiday coverage as needed. 

  • Assist Clinical Director with scheduling, and assigning tasks to counselors.

Requirements for the position:

  • BA/BS or minimum four years of experience in a Human Services field.  

  • Licensure of Alcohol and Drug Counselor (LADC I or LADC II) or Certified Addictions Counselor (CAC) or Certified Alcohol and Drug Abuse Counselor (CADAC) preferred. 

  • Minimum three years of experience in substance use disorder treatment and at least two years of counseling experience.  

  • Strong knowledge of the substance use treatment continuum and services and related community resources.  Demonstrated ability to work with individuals with substance use disorders.  

  • A COVID-19 vaccination is a requirement of the position.  One COVID-19 shot is acceptable, contingent on the individual receiving the second shot within the allotted time frame.

Duties

Functions as a Drug Abuse Treatment Specialist (DATS) within a Bureau of Prisons (BOP) federal correctional facility.

Provides direct services, individual therapy and/or group counseling, drug education, residential and/or non-residential treatment services which focuses on the rational behavioral therapy model of drug abuse treatment and criminality.

Responsible for the education of prison staff about drug abuse, drug abuse treatment and the local prison program.

Administers eligibility and psycho-social assessments as the basis for individual treatment planning.

Attends meetings with supervisors, other drug treatment DATSs, the unit team, etc., to share information, knowledge, ideas, and recommendations for the drug abuse treatment participant.

Along with all other correctional institution employees, incumbent is charged with responsibility for maintaining security of the institution. The staff correctional responsibilities precede all others required by this position and are performed on a regular and recurring basis.

 

Basic Requirements:

A. Degree: that included at least 24 semester hours of course work in the behavioral or social sciences.

OR

B. Combination of education and experience - that included at least 24 semester hours of course work in the behavioral or social sciences, and that provided applicants with knowledge of the behavioral or social sciences equivalent to a 4-year degree as shown in A above.

The Nurse Consultant (RN) is responsible for providing direct nursing care, monitoring the health care of individuals in the assigned caseload and assisting them with accessing appropriate health care. Essential Functions of the Position:

  • Actively participate on clinical teams, consult with Program Director(s), Senior Program Director(s) and Nurses to advocate for health and wellness needs of individuals in programs through on going consultation with program management, staff/clinical meetings, and supervision.
  • Monitor, evaluate and make recommendations regarding medical issues.
  • Facilitate communication with program staff and medical professionals including meeting with them as necessary, regarding medication and or health care needs of individuals.
  • Advocate for access to high quality health care for individuals.
  • Provide training to staff and individuals on health care topics, such as diabetes blood pressure monitoring, insulin management, g-tube and j-tube feedings, skin care, health care documentation, etc.
  • Complete documentation and maintain records such as nursing notes, health care assessments, or health care treatment plans.
  • Monitor medical record keeping systems and Medication Administration Program (MAP) to ensure compliance with all State and Federal regulations.
  • Provide direct nursing care to individuals as needed.
  • Provide clinical supervision of LPN’s in the assigned caseload when applicable
  • Act as on-call consultant to staff on a rotating schedule.
  • Performs all other duties and projects as assigned by the DHS, Dir. Care Coordination or VP of Developmental Services

Education and/or Experience Required

  • Bachelors Degree required or equivalent experience.

  • CADAC/LADAC or equivalent preferred, or actively pursuing certification.

  • Experience in individual and group counseling.

  • Prior knowledge of the field of substance abuse.

  • Knowledge of modality specific issues, such as substance abuse, homelessness, trauma, and other co-occurring disorders.
