AdCare Educational Institute of Maine, Inc. is seeking to hire a highly-motivated individual into a new Prevention Fellowship Program being implemented through its New England Prevention Technology Transfer Center (PTTC) program.  This one year fellowship, funded by SAMHSA, is part of a national fellowship program working to train and sustain a well-trained and knowledgeable cadre of prevention professionals who understand and exemplify the principles and best practices of substance use prevention.

The New England PTTC’s Building Our Leadership and Diversity (BOLD) Prevention Fellowship Program is focused on increasing the number of prevention professionals working within Black/African American communities and building their capacity to identify and chronicle programs, practices, and policies proven effective in reducing substance misuse risk factors and consequences and promoting mental health and protective factors or assets in Black/African American communities.

This is a paid full-time, one-year fellowship that will be placed with Rhode Island’s Department of Behavioral Healthcare, Developmental Disabilities & Hospitals (BHDDH), located in Cranston, Rhode Island. Fellows will work on projects as assigned by their placement site but will also have a portion of their time dedicated to learning and capacity development activities coordinated by the Prevention Technology Transfer Center (PTTC) network.  The BOLD Fellow will receive mentorship from prevention staff at their placement site as well as through AdCare’s PTTC program staff.

Duties and tasks include:

  • Assist with planning and development of a Rhode Island Teen Institute
  • Assist with changes and updates to Rhode Island’s IMPACT prevention data collection system
  • Assist with the review and approval of regional prevention strategic plans
  • Assist with the development of media projects
  • Assist with research and developing considerations to address cultural competency in prevention programming
  • Participating in the schedule of BOLD Fellows prevention science trainings and cohort activities
  • Participating in a cohort research project to support prevention in Black or African American communities.

In this project, under the supervision of the Joint Principal Investigators (Prof Penny Cook and Prof Raja Mukherjee) and co-Investigators (Dr Clare Allely and Dr Alan Price), you will carry out the feasibility study to gather sufficient information to design a robust randomised controlled trial (RCT) of the SPECIFIC parenting programme, demonstrate whether it is feasible to deliver the RCT and establish whether there is sufficient evidence to warrant an application to fund a definitive study. You will be expected to develop the application for funding for the definitive study.


University of Salford's connection to industry is stronger than ever, particularly in terms of our real-world research. The University of Salford is the leading UK university in research on Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD). FASD is caused by alcohol consumption in pregnancy, and is characterised by difficulties with motor coordination, speech and language, academic achievement, memory, attention, impulse control, hyperactivity, emotion regulation, adaptive functioning and social communication. The team at the University of Salford have designed ‘SPECIFIC’: an intervention for parents and carers of children newly diagnosed with FASD, using funding from the Medical Research Council. We now seek an experienced post doctoral research fellow to develop the next phase of this exciting research programme: a feasibility trial of SPECIFIC, funded by the National Institute for Health Research (Research for Patient Benefit) scheme, in partnership with the leading charity and the National FASD Clinic.

Project Overview

The substance use prevention and treatment initiative works to develop and support policies that address the opioid epidemic. The project does this by providing direct technical assistance to states on how to improve access to evidence-based, high-quality treatment for people with substance use disorders and implement other strategies to reduce the number of overdose deaths. Additionally, the project highlights and disseminates innovative community-based strategies to address the opioid epidemic. Finally, the project conducts advocacy in Washington, DC, to achieve its programmatic objectives.

To inform this work, the project conducts and publishes research and other information on evidence-based and emerging practices and maintains relationships with external experts and other stakeholders. The team comes from a wide variety of professional backgrounds with policy, advocacy, and research experience.

Position Overview

The officer, collaborating with project leadership and colleagues across the organisation, independently conducts research and analyses to support the project’s goals. Reporting to the senior manager, policy research and analysis, the officer provides issue area expertise on priority topics in the substance use field, leads development of publications and resources for policymakers, and plans stakeholder events designed to achieve projects goals.

Located in Pew's Washington, DC or Philadelphia office, this position is eligible for up to 60% telework.

 

Requirements

Job Summary:

Job Responsibilities:

  • Provides individual sessions to explore overall goals, treatment plan, and measurement of goal completion, assess further needs of individuals for successful recovery and program completion.
  • Conducts utilisation reviews based on assessment information, treatment progress, and established guidelines, to determine eligibility for services, continuation of services, and discharge for services, complete service authorisation requests, and maintain current authorisation for service provision.
  • Utilises assessment recommendations and input from client, family, and other involved natural and professional supports, develop person-centred treatment plans, and provide on-going monitoring and revision of treatment plans as indicated.
  • Provides preventive and therapeutic interventions in individual, family, and group counselling sessions including skills building , supportive counselling, and case coordination to help clients develop needed skills and support on-going treatment gains in regard to managing substance abuse and mental health symptoms and adapting to home, school and other environments
  • Consults with psychiatrist or other medical personnel regarding reporting behavioural observations and concerns, and improvement or concerns related to any prescribed medications.
  • Documents treatment interventions, community support and assessment of client’s progress based on treatment goals in client’s record according to state and agency requirements within 24 hours following the billed activities.

 

Required Education/Experience:

  • Qualified Substance Abuse Prevention Professional which is defined as: a graduate of a college or university with a Master’s degree in a human service field and has one year of full-time, post-graduate degree accumulated supervised experience in substance abuse prevention;

OR

  • A graduate of a college or university with a bachelor’s degree in a human service field and has two years of full-time, post-bachelor’s degree accumulated supervised experience in substance abuse prevention;

OR

  • A graduate of a college or university with a bachelor’s degree in a field other than human services and has four years of full-time, post bachelor’s degree accumulated supervised experience in substance abuse prevention;

OR

  • A substance abuse prevention professional who is certified as a Certified Substance Abuse Prevention Consultant (CSAPC) by the North Carolina Substance Abuse Professional Practice Board and meets the above requirements as a QSAPP

The post holder will report directly to Professor Thomas Phillips and will also work closely with the Hull Health Trials Unit (HHTU), Professor Sinclair, the University of Southampton, and other co-applicants in different centres to deliver this programme of research.

The successful candidate will support the overall implementation of the research programme and coordinate the delivery of a national survey of Alcohol Care Teams and a quasi-experimental trial across six hospital sites in England. The purpose of this position is to work with the Applied Prevention Science International (APSI) team to develop a classroom curriculum for high school students that addresses wellness and well-being as they encounter increasing risks of substance use and other problem behaviors.  The curriculum design is based on prevention science and the theoretical frameworks addressing the development of knowledge, skills, and competencies needed by adolescents as they progress through high school and afterwards.

​The curriculum writer will be responsible for writing the modules, lessons, and exercises that provide students the opportunity to not only learn the content, but to practice important skills including positive communication and other social interactions with peers and their teachers, critical thinking and decision-making in regard to their health and wellness, setting goals and planning for their immediate and more long-term futures, and exploring and managing their emotions as they face stress and other challenges in their school and community. 

​The curriculum will also incorporate special programming in 9th grade which will address the unique risks of transitioning into high school; and then prepare students in 11th and 12th grade for the important skills needed to transition out of high school into post-secondary life.

​There will be a science-oriented module available to grades 9-12 focusing on the pharmacology of psychoactive substances and their impact on the brain and the consequences of use.  The content will be based on material derived from the National Institute on Drug Abuse and APSI resources.

​Position Summary

​The job is a remote full-time position for 12 months, with possible options to continue.   The writer will be expected to produce about 24 lessons and related materials for 45-minute classroom sessions for 12 modules.  These are listed below.

  2. Participate remotely in monthly planning meetings with the team and consultants during the 9-month development period.  

  3. Develop the desired order and group the delivery of modules in 3-4 packages in concert with the team so these can be reviewed while others are being written.

  4. Overall, there will be about 9 months to complete the 12 modules with lessons and support materials for the initial pretesting with the target audience of high school students;

Qualifications/Experience

  • At least 5 years of teaching high school plus an advanced degree in curriculum development and/or assessment

  • Familiarity with teaching or assessing science-based curricula at the secondary level

  • Completed curricula at the middle and high school level

  • Advisory experience in regard to district-level work with adherence to secondary school standards

Communications and Creativity in Written and Digital Form

  • Excellent writing skills in a variety of digital mass and social media 

  • Developed and wrote lesson plans for a high school program

  • Created researched based lesson plans, unit plans, and curriculum including gender specific and culturally specific programming.

This newly established post-doctoral fellowship at the ISMH, University of Stirling offers an exciting opportunity for an outstanding researcher to join a world-leading Institute carrying out high profile public health research on marketing, behaviour change and policies to prevent non-communicable diseases. More than one appointment may be made subject to available funding and suitable candidates. 

Example Projects: The successful Hastings Fellow(s) will be matched to selected studies at ISMH according to their interests/skillset, funded by national and international funders (NIHR, Cancer Research UK, MRC and others).  The following are examples of project work to which fellows may be allocated; possible/preferred allocations will be discussed with appointable candidates at interview.

  1. an evaluation of policy and practice regarding late-night opening hours for bars/clubs including survey, interview data and documentation analysis
  2. analysing the marketing of zero/low alcohol products
  3. supporting analysis of alcohol policy stakeholder views in South America and/or Africa
  4. exploring youth views on the marketing of e-cigarettes
  5. analysis of qualitative data from a trial of e-cigarettes in homeless centres
  6. examining alcohol industry involvement in alcohol policy and marketing in Africa and in funding academic research
  7. supporting ongoing research on the health of prisoners and their families
  8. coding and analysis of qualitative data on long Covid, in the UK and internationally
  9. exploring ways to reduce exposure to second-hand tobacco smoke across different settings
  10. carrying out quantitative analysis of exposure to indoor and outdoor air pollutants
  11. developing an interface for analysis of ambulance call-outs for drug overdoses and proposals for individual level data linkage with drug-related deaths.

Other opportunities may arise during the fellowship and the successful Fellow will have the opportunity to co-author peer-reviewed papers from studies on which they are involved.  The fellowship is intended to provide an intensive working and learning experience in a dynamic and supportive research environment, and to accelerate the successful candidate’s research career through expansion of networks, skills, knowledge and experience. 

An outstanding researcher is sought who is enthusiastic, meticulous and hard-working, and who is comfortable and capable of working across several projects, taking on new topics and challenges within a supportive and friendly team.

The Fellow will: develop their existing skills base in either/both quantitative and qualitative methods and/or literature scoping and reviewing as needed on specific projects; and further build their public health knowledge and experience of study management. Duties may involve primary data collection and analysis (interview, focus group or observational data, documentation, survey or exposure data), secondary analysis, write-up and presentation of results including working proactively with policymakers, NGOs, research funders and other stakeholders.

Most projects involve working in multi-institution teams, with excellent networking opportunities such as through ISMH’s membership of the UK Prevention Research Partnership (UKPRP) SPECTRUM Consortium, the Public Health Policy Research Unit of the Department of Health, and our leadership roles in the UKPRP Community of Practice and several international research networks. 

It is expected that the Fellow will also get involved in or lead the drafting of a research proposal related to the post-holder’s interests and aligned with ISMH’s aims.

Bonnie Brae, a Special Education School and Residential Treatment Facility for at risk youth, is currently seeking a full time Substance Abuse Counselor. The Substance Abuse Counselor will be responsible for the completion of assessments, evaluations and authorisations including bio-psychosocial assessments, substance abuse evaluations, IMDS Strength and Needs Assessments, Joint Care Reviews, direct clinical service; individual therapy, group therapy and family therapy. Treatment planning including updating treatment plans monthly, attendance at treatment team meetings and running treatment teams as required, as well as discharge planning. The Substance Abuse Counselor will be a member of an interdisciplinary treatment team. Participation in performance improvement activities including program development and oversight. Interacting with youths and staff in the Milieu. Case management including documentation of all direct services , consultations, phone calls, arranging home passes, oversight of urine drug screens and attendance at meetings. Supervision of non-clinically licensed master’s level staff pending licensure. Preparation and facilitation of applicable licensing, contracting and accreditation surveys.

Experience Required

Education/License Requirements: • New Jersey Licensed Therapist, dually licensed in Mental Health and Substance Abuse required. • Masters in Social Work or Mental Health Field and LCADC license required. • In addition to the LCADC license, a LAC, LSW, LCSW or LPC license required. • Certified Clinical Supervisor (CCS) preferred. Knowledge/Skills/Abilities/Experience: • Valid Driver’s license – not currently suspended or suspended over the last three years due to accidents or moving violations. • Two years post-Masters experience desirable. Two years residential treatment experience desirable. • Evening hours required as dictated by program needs. • One weekend per month required.

Overview

The Department of Health Promotion & Prevention (HPP) envisions a campus which understands the impact of the environment on healthy communities. HPP strives to fully support a continuum of education and prevention, early intervention, and access to services while also promoting a culture of recovery and healthy life choices for all students. HPP is responsible for providing appropriate, evidence-based prevention and health promotion programming related to substance abuse, stress management, nutrition, physical fitness, and sleep. HPP staff members serve on a variety of University-wide committees and task forces.


What You'll Do

This position is hybrid, working in person on campus for at least half the work week during the fall and spring semesters while classes are in session, with more flexibility for remote work over the summer and during school breaks. There are periods of time and events in which in-person participation all week is required, especially during New Student Orientation and when University wide events occur.

The Alcohol and Other Drug (AOD) Specialist provides a spectrum of evidence-based education and intervention services that address alcohol and substance use in the Tufts student population. This spectrum includes population-level education, prevention programs, and environmental management designed to reduce misuse of alcohol and other drugs by Tufts students; conducting assessment, intervention, short-term treatment, and other direct service to individual students who have concerns about alcohol or other drug use; and community-building activities and group-related services to students in recovery from substance use disorders.

The AOD Specialist will be a leader on alcohol and substance issues and will work collaboratively to maintain positive relationships with students and a healthy campus culture.  The AOD Specialist will use their content expertise and relationships with students to contribute to the transformational education Tufts students get as part of their outside-the-classroom experience.


What We're Looking For

Basic Requirements:

  • Knowledge and skills as typically acquired by a Master’s degree in psychology, counseling, public health, social work, or related field.
  • Massachusetts Licensed Alcohol and Drug Counselor (LADC) or equivalent
  • Minimum of 3 years of relevant professional experience
  • Experience working with college students
  • Experience with or training in motivational interviewing, CHOICES, BASICS, SBIRT, and other techniques useful in working with college students around substance use concerns.
  • Experience creating and delivering educational or prevention programming.
  • Demonstrated excellent written and oral communication skills and interpersonal skills, including presentation and public speaking.
  • Digital fluency, including expert use of common productivity software (e.g., videoconferencing, email client, word processing, spreadsheets, databases, presentations, online programs, etc.) and the use of social media for health
  • Basic understanding of research design and program evaluation.
  • Ability to plan, implement, and evaluate evidence-based health promotion strategies, programs, and services designed to educate the student population in matters related to student substance abuse
  • Demonstrated ability to train professional staff and supervise students intern/peer
  • Demonstrated ability to identify and make referrals to the network of campus services for students and to collaborate with institutional partners.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with students with diverse backgrounds and life experiences.
  • Commitment to Tufts’ values, including civic engagement, and the educational purpose of the Division of Student Affairs.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Understanding of health promotion and experience with a college aged population all

The Matilda Centre brings together researchers in broad fields to share skills, integrate data, and harness new technologies to develop and trial innovative prevention, early intervention and treatment programs for substance use and mental disorders.  

The Matilda Centre is seeking a Postdoctoral Research Fellow (Level A) / Research Fellow (Level B) to develop a program of prevention-focused research and dissemination.  Within this role you will work with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities to develop, implement and evaluate culturally inclusive school-based drug and alcohol prevention resources. You will be actively involved in consulting with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities and supporting local Aboriginal facilitators to implement the wellbeing program and research. 

This position is open to qualified academic Level A and B applicants. The level at appointment will be determined on the skills and experience of the selected candidate. 

To be successful in this position you will be able to use a high degree of initiative and judgement to coordinate multiple activities and teams.  

Your key responsibilities will be to: 

  • Co-ordinate consultations with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities and stakeholders to gain feedback on the project aims and implementation, and interpretation of the findings. 

  • Liaise and work in partnership with stakeholders, designers and web developers to refine and update the Strong and Deadly Futures school-based program. 

  • Manage a cluster randomised controlled trial to evaluate the Strong and Deadly Futures program, including the recruitment of schools, data collection and management and intervention delivery. 

  • Develop a program of prevention-focused research and dissemination, including preparing funding applications, conducting data analysis and preparing publications for peer-review journals and conference presentations

The Matilda Centre provides a world-first synergy of leading prevention, early intervention and treatment research and translation programs in substance use and mental disorders. The Matilda Centre undertakes research and brings together researchers currently working across disorder silos (addiction, depression, suicide, anxiety, exercise physiology, dietetics, chronic disease) to share skills, synergise data, and harness new technologies to develop and trial innovative prevention and early intervention programs for substance use and mental disorders.

The Faculty of Medicine and Health is looking for a Research Assistant to join the Matilda Centre for Research in Mental Health and Substance Use. The Research Assistant will work within the Prevention Team, which focuses on preventing the development of substance use and mental health problems among young people. The Research Assistant will contribute to the Positive Choices project, which aims to equip young people, their parents, and teachers with evidence-based information and response strategies to prevent drug and alcohol-related harm.

Reporting into the Postdoctoral Research Fellow, this is a fixed-term full-time position (35 hours per week) based at our Matilda Centre in Camperdown.

Some of the key responsibilities and activities will include:

  • updating and maintaining online information and assisting with the development of additional prevention resources

  • conducting literature reviews and scoping of existing resources

  • liaising with web developers, managing enquiries, and maintaining communication with teachers, schools, and other subscribers

  • assisting with the design and implementation of studies to evaluate the impact and reach of Positive Choices.
